Rattlesnake hill rock climbing

Rattlesnake Hill Nevada, volcano

Elevation: 4,165 feet

Coordinates: 39.4899 degrees latitude by -118.752 degrees longitude

Rattlesnake Hill is an explosive vent of nearby Soda Lakes volcano.

The hill is popular for mountain biking and hiking to over 200 feet above the valley floor. Not to mention the fantastic view of over 150 significant mountains surrounding the hill.

Goose Lake at Stillwater marshes

Job peak above Goose lake

At the base of Job Peak and Table Mountain east of Fallon, the Stillwater marsh (or lake now) at  an elevation of 3,875, is only a few feet from overflowing its banks and must be spilled into the agricultural ditch along its west bank, see photos.

And about 25 miles up the Carson river is Lake Lahontan, only a few feet from the top of the dam, keeping it from flooding the the city of Fallon and the Stillwater marsh.

More than 6 times the normal precipitation in the past two years has drenched the great basin and mountains surrounding it. The flooding of the Black Rock desert during Burning Man was clearly a red flag, if the rain and snow continue like this another 2 years, Fallon at only 3,960 ft. elevation could be underwater.

Dam at Lake Lahontan

Just below full, this watershed could fill the Stillwater valley and drown the city of Fallon, Nevada if this rain does not slow down.

Soda Lakes Volcano Nevada

Dry caldera, 6 miles from Soda Lake volcano's underwater caldera

Soda Lake volcano's dry caldera at Rattlesnake Hill

Active volcano, last erupted only 1,500 years ago. The main caldera is underwater however, this dry volcanic vent 6 miles away coupled with the nuclear test site 30 miles away could mean trouble.

Job Peak Nevada, west face

Elevation: 8,727 feet

Only a handful of climbers have hiked Job Peak in the recent years. In spite of the hundreds of ancient trails to the top of the peak and nearby Mount Lincoln Nevada, Job remains one of the least climbed peaks in Nevada.

Access to the base of this peak is easy and near downtown Fallon. Take East County road from Stillwater and turn on the rugged dirt road to Goverment Trail Canyon or Pete Canyon where multiple trails to the top of the mountain begin.
